Beading Workshops

beads I am pleased to let you know that this summer I will be teaching a course in Bead Weaving.  The Haliburton School of The Arts, in partnership with Education Huntsville, the Canada Summit Centre and the Town of Huntsville, will be offering courses in Huntsville in July.   The Bead Weaving Course will take place July 25 – 29, 2011.  It will be an intensive course and if you are keen to get started in this medium, it will be an excellent place to start.  Please sign up online or call to register for this course. Below is a brief description.

Bead Weaving Basics

This course will explore the main stitches that make up the foundation of contemporary bead weaving techniques. These stitches are used to create a broad range of work from jewellery to three-dimensional objects. The application of these beading stitches will concentrate primarily on their use in jewellery design. Instruction will include discussions on the mechanics of designing jewellery to fit the body and on working with colour, texture and form. Each day will feature a new stitch and some of its variations. The aim is to equip you with the building blocks of bead weaving so that you can continue independently, as well as go on to creating your own designs. Because bead weaving projects can take a lot of time, you may not finish all projects in class. Bead weaving is a very creative, meditative and portable medium. Youre limited only by your imagination!

peyotePeyote Stitch & Variations
The peyote stitch is one of the most important & most versatile of the foundation stitches. During the morning I will focus on teaching: flat even count peyote; flat odd count peyote (as seen in the photo); circular peyote; embellishment for peyote; increasing and decreasing. Depending upon your skill level and preference, you will work on either a flat peyote cuff or a circular peyote bangle, with or without embellishments.
cuffHerringbone & Variations:
Herringbone or Ndebele stitch is another versatile and important foundation stitch. We will work on flat herringbone;circular herringbone and twisted circular herringbone.
Your project will be working on a either a flat herringbone or circular herringbone bracelet.
bezelBeaded Bezels:
A great way to get a little “bling” into your beading…. We capture and surround either a crystal rivoli stone or a semi precious agate stone for this project. The stitch used is circular peyote and embellishments.
toggleToggles & Attachments:
How do you finish off your jewellery and add
a closure to your piece? In this workshop we
will explore beaded toggles and loops and
beaded buckles and how to incorporate your
closure as part of your design.
nettingNetting & Embellishments:
In this workshop you will learn flat netting that will form the base for embellishment. Your project will be working on a flat cuff that will be covered with embellishments including pearls, stones and “bead soup”….a mix of different beads. This is an exercise in colour & texture....and patience.
