This year my main teaching will be at The Haliburton School for the Arts during the month of August. I also teach workshops in my home studio in both beading and encaustic painting. I am not organizing any formal workshops, but if you have a small group of friends who would like to do a workshop, please contact me to arrange a convenient date. For beading workshops the group size is from 4 to 6 people and for encaustic painting the group is from 2 to 4 people.

The material fee includes all your beads, semi precious stones and beading tools and some clasps
Any Sterling silver components you would like to include in your work will be available for purchase.

This project-based course will provide instruction on some of the main foundation stitches used in this craft. These stitches will include peyote, herringbone and right angle stitch, along with some of their variations. Instruction will conclude with combining stitches to create shaped and three dimensional pieces. Learn to make beaded clasps and how to capture and embellish a crystal rivoli. Jewellery design focusing on wearability, durability and comfort, as well as the use of colour and shape in your work will be explored. The variety of choice available in beads will be introduced; however most of the beads used will be Japanese glass seed beads and delicas (tubular) with some semi-precious stones and pearls included. The process of off loom bead weaving has great calming and beneficial value. It's a craft that can soothe, putting you in a quiet, creative zone while you stitch. This course is suitable for both beginner and intermediate skill levels. **Please note that you may not complete all projects as bead weaving projects can take many hours to finish.

BaxterStudio School is a new and exciting educational program from Baxter Arts Centre in Bloomfield, Ontario. This program offers unique workshops taught by Prince Edward County professional artists within the artist's studio. You can find a link to my website from the Baxter Art Centre page.

Workshop Details

Jewellery Workshops will explore fun projects that use some of the main stitches that make up the foundation of contemporary bead weaving techniques: peyote, square, herringbone and netting. These foundation stitches are used to create a broad range of work of jewellery. instruction will include discussions on the mechanics of designing jewellery to fit the body and on working with colour, texture and form. Below are some workshop samples, but if you see some technique or piece you would like to learn, I can design a workshop for that as well. Because bead weaving projects can take a lot of time, you may not finish all projects in class. Bead weaving is a very creative, meditative and portable medium. Sample Jewellery Workshops

herringbone bracelet
Herringbone Stitch Bracelet
Learn the art of stitching beads together using colour, texture and form. This workshop focuses on the circular Herringbone stitch. This stitch can be done either flat or circular. In this project we create a dimensional bracelet with the possibility of adding embellishments. The finished bracelet will be personal and beautiful.

square stitch bracelet

Square Stitch Bracelet
This square stitch bracelet is an easy entry level bead weaving project.  It uses 4 mm Japanese cube beads which build quickly as you stitch.  Your design can be graphic or random...it's up to you to invent as you go along. You will have a fabulous bracelet at the end!
Level: all levels

netting bracelet

Netted Bracelet or Necklace
This is a great netting stitch. You will also learn how to insert a core to support the bead structure. This can be made with so many different beads and each will give you a different look. It can be made short for a bracelet of longer for a necklace.

peyote bracelet

Peyote wave bracelet
Peyote is one of the most important stitches in bead weaving. It is often combined with other stitches to create 3 dimensional beading. In this project, you will learn how to introduce different size beads into your work which gives this bracelet an organic feel. We will be doing a simpler clasp such as a button or toggle for our closure.
